Woodswoman was originally created as an installation. It follows the life of an autobiography no one seemed to like about a woman who loved and fought for the wild.  It invites us to sit back and contemplate this outcast while watching the story of her life literally burn.  Vanessa Renwick is an experimental media maker based in Portland, OR, and the founder of the Oregon Dept. of Kickass.  More about her work can be found here.

Mask (digital video still)

Stephen Nachtigall’s Mask frames a VR headset as a device that limits vision rather than expanding it as we watch a lone figure stumble through a dense forest.
Originally from Canada, Stephen lives and works in Arcata, California, where he is on the faculty at Humboldt State University.  More about his work can be found here.

Computer Hymn (video still) 2018

A short work by Clint Sleeper and Lydia Moyer made during summer 2018 on an island in northern Iceland.  "The Hymn to Saint John The Baptist" provides the soundtrack for a chakra-keyed laptop sitting at the energy point of Mount Kaldbakur (in the background), alluding to the Pagan and Christian histories that co-exist in Iceland, a country which is both technologically advanced and deeply connected to it's rugged and wild landscapes.

17 Days, vol. 8

For 2017 - 18 school year, the Niche will be playing a program curated by artist and academic Adriane Little.  The program was first screened at Western Michigan University as part of this project.  We will have a new work up every two weeks.  Please check back soon for more details.

April - July: Acre TV

Acre TV is an artist-made livestreaming tele-vision network that features live and canned video, performances, durational works, and experimental broadcasts.  It is based out of Chicago.  The Niche will be screening a selection from past broadcasts that was curated by Andrew Mausert-Mooney, one of Acre TVs founders.

Clint Sleeper: Nov. 14 - Dec. 10

Clint Sleeper is an artist who makes work about the humorous and tragic end of an economic and political system (namely this one).  Teaching Capitalism to Nature is a video series in which the artist endeavors to educate nature as to the machinations of the market by reading to it aloud from seminal economic texts. Rachel Devorah/Katie Schetlick/Jennfier Lauren Smith: Oct 11 - Nov 7

For Now is a collaboration between composer Rachel Devorah, dancer and choreographer Katie Schetlick, and artist Jennifer Lauren Smith.  The video was made for a collaborative exhibition at P/H/O/A/N, a space for time-based art in Brooklyn, NY.  More about that collaboration here.

Roxanne Campbell: Sept. 12 - Oct. 11

Roxanne Campbell works with photographic and moving images to explore the humanity and diversity of the African Diaspora.  Color Bar is an ongoing archive project that collects the experiences of black men through first-person interviews.  In the fall of 2016, she will continue the project as a fellow of the Institute for Creative Arts at the University of Cape Town in South Africa.  More about Roxanne’s work can be found here.

Takahisa "Mergrim" Mitsumori - February 11 - March 14

Mergrim is Takahisa Mitsumori- experimental sound artist, electronic musician, beatmaker, and DJ.
He is the founder of Moph Records, an electronic music label based in Tokyo Japan, and the organizer of Different Directions, a monthly DJ showcase in Shibuya.

William Wegman - September 7 - October 7

William Wegman, Video Works 1970 - 1999 These videos present an exhaustive archive of artist William Wegman's innovative, influential, and often hilarious performances, both with and without his Weimaraner friend, Man Ray.

Inspired by the oblique humor of the 1950s comedians Bob and Ray and the atmosphere of experimentation in the art of the 1960s, reacting to the endless reductions of multiple -ism's sweeping through the art world, these pieces are a cross-over form of visual art that had almost no precedent and that received favorable critical notice from a wide audience of art lovers.
